Assessor Question:

I’m writing to seek clarification about modelling void zones in FR5, and specifically modelling a lift space.

What’s the most accurate way to model a lift?

  1. Daytime zone on the bottom level and void zones on all levels above; OR
  2. Daytime zones on all levels and horizontal opening on all levels above the bottom one?

The FR5 manual states that ‘Double Height Void Zone should be used for a zone that effectively has no floor const

Double height zone that effectively has no floor construction and is incorporated into the parent zone below.
NatHERS tech note states domestic lifts are modelled as day time zone.

ruction between itself and the zone below’. The lift does not have any floor construction between levels, and I’m leaning towards option a as per above, but it would be great to have some clarifications from you.

TechLink Response:

  • Lift is modelled as a daytime zone with a horizontal opening on all levels above ground level.
  • Double height zone that effectively has no floor construction and is incorporated into the parent zone below.
  • NatHERS tech note states domestic lifts are modelled as day time zone.
