Assessor Question:

Can a dog/cat door be installed into an existing dwelling without impacting the existing NatHERS rating?

TechLink Response:

  • There is no specific data entry for pet doors in NatHERS ratings.
  • The surface area of the wall taken up by the pet door is insignificant in relation to the rest of the wall area.
  • To be absolutely accurate a tiny door may be entered as a door.
  • Another impact if installed in a sliding window will be to reduce the openability % of the sliding sash.
  • Also if installed to replace some glass there will be a very minor alteration to the U and SHGC values but the change will be virtually immeasurable.
