Window Openability

Assessor Question:

At the moment, we are modelling windows as 1 window code per window. For example, the window below we would model this as 1 whole awning window and adjust the openabilities accordingly.

We feel that it may actually be more accurate to model this window in 3 parts; 2 openable awning windows and 1 fixed panel. We'd like to model this way for all windows/doors.

Before making this change to our modelling protocols though I just wanted to double-check that we are okay to start modelling windows this way?

TechLink Response:

  • The data entry protocol for windows allows for configurations like this to be included as a single window unit.
  • This is deemed to achieve an effective level of accuracy while involving time efficiency in the data entry process.
  • Openability percentage should be adjusted appropriately.
  • The more fine grained accuracy will however be achieved by entering the three separate portions but will attract additional processing time.
  • That is only the case if performance data matching is  available for all the individual sections.
  • Fixed and openable portions often have considerably different SHGC values due to the relative frame fraction figures.
