Shading: Protected trees in the ACT

Region: ACT

Assessor Question:

I have a question about modelling shading from trees. I know that only protected trees can be modelled, but this is in the ACT so all trees above a certain diameter are automatically protected.  What is required in terms of documentation to model the trees?

TechLink Response:

  • The Technical Note protocol for tree shading data entry is in place as an attempt to limit gaming of the system which may take advantage of shading when there is knowledge or a good chance that the trees will be removed at a point in the future.
  • Clause 10 covers details around which trees can be included.
  • The critical words used are “Protected”, “Preservation Order” and “Heritage Protection”.
  • There are likely to be local interpretations as to what those words are understood to mean.
  • The understanding here is that the trees above the trigger diameter are protected which means it is very difficult to remove them.
  • In that case it is reasonable to include them in a NatHERS rating as set out in Clause 10.
  • In cold climates like the ACT shading from trees will usually cause impediment to winter solar gain and result in an appropriately conservative result.
  • It is prudent to add a note in the additional information page to highlight the understanding that tree shading has been included in the rating and that accordingly their removal at a later date will alter the NatHERS score.
  • The change in performance may detract from or benefit performance on a seasonal basis.
