Shading: How do I model a Pergola?

Assessor Question:

The drawings I have show a fixed metal pergola structure. The amount of shade from the structure itself is maybe 5%. Obviously the intention is that either shade cloth or deciduous vines would be used to provide summer shade. But what would be required on the plans to be able to model summer shade?

TechLink Response:

  • Adjustable shade devices, as a general rule, provide the optimal thermal performance response.
  • The fixed structure shading can be included as the winter value.
  • That said, 5% may be correct but without seeing the design it seems to be quite a low figure.
  • Deciduous vines may be modelled as an aid to providing non-regulatory advice as to how a dwelling may perform but should not be included in the regulatory compliance  version.
  • This is due to the variability of shade provided and uncertainty as to the long term maintenance of the vine.
  • Shade cloth performance can be included based on the detailed specification information nominating the shade percentage of the material to be installed.
