Assessor Question:

Could i get some information or a tech note that sarking is needed for metal roofs as i cant seem to find it.

TechLink Response:

  • The guidance provided by ABCB Handbook on Condensation in Buildings should provide reasonably convincing information as to why sarking is needed to avoid virtual rain in the roof cavity that can saturate bulk insulation on the ceiling.
  • The problem with condensation in roof cavities has been made even worse with the adoption of steel batten/purlin material in place of timber.
  • Products like ‘anticon blanket sarking’ or sarking with a foam core are required.
  • The other issue that has become a problem with tighter draft sealing of construction  cavities is that the roof attic volume also needs ventilation to ensure that air borne moisture rising up through the ceiling can be vented out to limit condensation potential.
