Modelling Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) Systems

Region: All States

Assessor Question:

If a project has an HRV system, do we model the ducts in anyway?
Is it an enclosed system much like a ducted HVAC unit so gets ignored?
Are the inlets considered as exhaust fans, particularly to wet areas?

TechLink Response:

  • A heat recovery ventilation system is an energy efficient, controlled, and balanced ventilation system.
  • It extracts the moist, stale air from all the wet rooms in your house and replaces it with filtered, fresh, recovered warm air to all your living areas and bedrooms without letting the heat escape.
  • Stale air extracted from wet areas pass through the heat recovery unit before exhausted out.
  • On that note they should be ignored for modelling purposes.
