Assessor Question:

Our client has recently specified Glass reinforced concrete (GRC/GFRC) on a project. We have requested further technical data and their preferred supplier or manufacturer.

GRC blends traditional concrete components with specially engineered glass fibers to create a final product with increased compressive, flexural, and tensile strength. It is mainly used in exterior building façade panels and as architectural precast concrete.

We seek your advice on a suitable NatHERS material library proxy, given there is no specific GRC material.

TechLink Response:

  • Where wall panel materials occur in a project specification that are not available in default library options it is possible to construct approximations to best match conductivity and thermal mass criteria.
  • The resulting thickness may be different to the specified material but the total R-value and mass per square meter should be an accurate match.
  • A good way to do this is to create an assembly made up of thin layers resembling plywood. This ensures that the conductivity and mass are evenly distributed throughout the material to best match the homogenous characteristics of the specified material.
